Amazon launches a new feature letting U.S. customers text Alexa to search, get recommendations, and order products, expanding the Alexa for Shopping experience beyond voice commands.
Amazon has introduced a new text-based shopping feature for its Alexa AI assistant, enabling customers to place orders and browse products through simple text messages. This enhancement builds upon the Alexa for Shopping service that debuted earlier, aiming to provide a more convenient way to shop when texting is preferred over using the Amazon app or website.
Users can describe the products they want to buy via text or even send a photograph of an item, and Alexa will search through Amazon's listings to find matching options. The assistant then replies with personalized recommendations and can place orders directly on the user’s behalf once they confirm their choice. This interaction shows product images and allows users to review before purchasing.
Launching initially to a limited group of U.S. customers who receive an invitation text, Amazon plans to expand the feature to millions more users in the coming weeks. The contact will appear on users' phones under the name "Amazon Alexa," making it seamless to initiate shopping conversations.
Amazon's Vice President of Conversational Shopping, Rajiv Mehta, emphasized how this service acts as a personal shopping agent just a text away, able to remember customer preferences—such as dietary restrictions—and track deals to notify users when watched items go on sale. Customers can use this service for various purposes including weekly grocery orders, gift suggestions, and finding alternatives to photographed products.
This text-based interaction aligns with trends among tech companies integrating chatbot capabilities via messaging. Recent examples include OpenAI’s Dot AI assistant for text conversations and DoorDash’s Ask DoorDash chatbot for meal ordering, highlighting a growing shift to conversational commerce.
At launch, the texting feature is only available in the United States, compatible with typical SMS messaging, and aims to enhance customer convenience by reducing reliance on app navigation or voice commands, making shopping accessible anytime via a chat dialogue.
