Airbnb will debut a specialized AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, designed to assist with trip planning, booking management, and traveler support through a rich, travel-focused interface.
Airbnb has announced plans to launch a dedicated AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, aiming to transform how travelers plan trips and manage their bookings. The announcement came in Airbnb’s Q3 shareholder letter and was further detailed in a call with analysts. Unlike typical AI chatbots, Airbnb’s agent will offer a more interactive and visually rich interface tailored specifically for travel needs.
CEO Brian Chesky emphasized that travel planning is an aspirational experience, with 80% of travelers enjoying the research and decision-making process. He explained that current AI agents excel at simple tasks but are not well-suited for the complexities of travel discovery and group decision-making. Therefore, Airbnb is building a custom AI agent that moves beyond text-heavy chatbots to provide an engaging and personalized interface.
The agent will utilize a library of hundreds of travel-specific components such as maps, photos, comparison tools, calendars, and itineraries. These elements will be dynamically composed in real time to match each traveler’s unique preferences and questions, creating an experience Chesky described as "a little bit like generative UI."
With nearly two decades of experience connecting hosts and guests, Airbnb is leveraging its data to inform the agent’s design. The AI assistant will support travelers not only in selecting accommodations but throughout their trip, including handling reservation changes, payment issues, refunds, rebookings, and 24-hour safety support—capabilities beyond what generic AI agents can provide.
Looking forward, Airbnb intends for the AI travel agent to expand assistance to related services and experiences, areas the company has been focusing on since last year’s platform redesign. This specialized approach aligns with Airbnb’s strategy to enhance the entire travel journey explicitly tailored for its marketplace.
The reveal of the AI travel agent came alongside strong financial results for Airbnb, reporting 19% revenue growth in Q3 at $4.87 billion and raising its revenue growth forecast for 2026 to high teens percentage points. Chesky noted that Airbnb is currently experiencing its fastest pace of revenue growth in over three years.
By creating a travel-focused AI interface that supports both trip inspiration and operational needs, Airbnb aims to differentiate itself in the evolving landscape of AI-driven travel technology and improve the overall user experience beyond simple chatbot interactions.
