Electronic Arts is launching 25 classic PC games on Steam, including anniversary editions of Road Rash and multiple Wing Commander titles, updated for modern systems with enhanced quality and performance.
Electronic Arts (EA) is reintroducing a collection of 25 classic PC games on the Steam platform, featuring specially crafted "Anniversary Editions" for several of its most celebrated franchises. Among the highlighted releases are the motorcycle racing game Road Rash and six titles from the Wing Commander series. EA states that these editions maintain "the original look, feel and creative intent of the game" while incorporating quality-of-life improvements to enhance compatibility with contemporary hardware and controls, as well as to boost overall performance.
The development of these Anniversary Editions was sparked by the discovery of a "physical media vault" containing thousands of legacy assets, including Betacam, VHS, and D1 tapes. By digitizing these materials, EA was able to recover and reedit master full-motion video (FMV) sequences, restoring over 1,500 scenes across various games. Notably, the updated Wing Commander titles also officially integrate certain community-developed modifications, acknowledging fan contributions.
Pricing for the Anniversary Editions of Road Rash and the Wing Commander series is set at $9.99 each, while the remaining classics—such as titles from the Ultima and Crusader series—will be available for $4.99. These games will be offered not only on Steam but also on GOG and the EA App, broadening access for PC gamers.
The full lineup of the 25 games includes:
- Road Rash: 30th Anniversary Edition - Wing Commander series (including II, III, IV, Prophecy, Privateer, Academy, and Armada) with Anniversary Editions spanning 30 to 35 years - Strike Commander - Theme Hospital - Crusader: No Remorse - Crusader: No Regret - The Ultima series from I through IX, including "Ultima Underworld I" and "Ultima Underworld II"
This launch reflects EA's effort to preserve and modernize its classic catalog for a new generation of players, balancing nostalgia with updated technical standards. The move also underscores the enduring popularity and cultural significance of these franchises in the history of PC gaming.
