Amid evolving website-building trends driven by AI, Squarespace is laying off 19% of its employees as part of restructuring to focus on faster growth and AI innovation.

Squarespace, a leading web hosting and website building company, announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off approximately 19% of its global employees, which accounts for around 300 jobs. This move is part of a broader organizational restructuring intended to simplify operations, refine the company's strategic priorities, and accelerate its progress toward its next growth phase.

The layoffs come during a period of profound transformation in the website building industry, largely fueled by advancements in generative artificial intelligence. AI-powered "vibe-coding" platforms now require users to provide simple prompts to generate fully functional and aesthetically coherent website frontends, dramatically lowering the barriers and effort needed to create web presences.

Competitors in the space have increasingly embraced AI innovations. Wix acquired Base44 for $80 million last year, while Lovable secured a $400 million Series C round valuing the company at $13.3 billion, highlighting investor enthusiasm for AI-driven website builders. Additionally, Google introduced Stitch, enabling rapid user interface generation.

Squarespace itself has been actively integrating AI into its offerings. In 2024, it launched Blueprint, an AI tool designed to assist users in crafting websites. Most recently, the company announced Forma, an AI-native platform currently accepting user sign-ups via a waitlist, signaling a strategic pivot toward AI-centric services within its ecosystem.

Founded in 2004, Squarespace went public in 2021 with a valuation of $10 billion but faced challenges sustaining investor enthusiasm. As a result, it returned to private ownership in 2024 following a $7 billion private equity acquisition.

According to Jeff Seedman, a public relations specialist for Squarespace, these workforce reductions and restructuring efforts are essential for the company to adapt rapidly to industry changes and position itself competitively in the evolving landscape shaped by AI-driven web technologies.
