Microsoft posted $92.3 billion revenue and $33.6 billion net income in Q1 2027, driven by 30% cloud revenue growth. The company restructured reporting into two segments: Agents and Infra, and Devices and Consumer, highlighting strong Azure and Microsoft 365 performance.

Microsoft announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, revealing significant growth particularly in its cloud business. The company generated $92.3 billion in revenue during the quarter, marking a 19 percent increase year-over-year, alongside a 32 percent rise in net income to $33.6 billion.

This quarter also saw Microsoft adopt a new financial reporting structure, consolidating its operations into two segments: Agents and Infra, and Devices and Consumer. This replaces the previous divisions of Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing.

The Agents and Infra segment encompasses Azure, Microsoft 365 commercial and consumer offerings, and server products. This segment contributed $76.8 billion, or 83 percent of total revenue, reflecting a 25 percent year-over-year increase. Microsoft disclosed Azure's quarterly revenue for the first time, which reached $33.17 billion, up 48 percent from the previous year.

Conversely, the Devices and Consumer segment, which includes Windows, Xbox, Surface, and Microsoft’s search and advertising businesses, accounted for $15.5 billion—or 17 percent of revenue—experiencing a 3 percent decline. Within this segment, Windows OEM and devices revenue dropped 22 percent due to ongoing challenges in the PC market, including a 20 percent market decline dubbed the 'RAMageddon' crisis. Microsoft attributes this decrease to factors such as the earlier end of Windows 10 support, inventory adjustments by original equipment manufacturers, and broader market weakness.

Microsoft also recently released updated Surface devices, including Intel- and Qualcomm-powered Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 models. Surface pricing has increased amid the component shortages affecting the PC market, which is expected to face difficulties through the fiscal year.

Xbox hardware revenue fell by 14 percent year-over-year, with Xbox content and services—including Game Pass—down 2 percent. Microsoft has not updated Game Pass subscriber figures since reporting 34 million users over two years ago. The Xbox division has undergone significant restructuring this quarter, including major layoffs and studio spin-offs, with CEO Asha Sharma promising a return to player and revenue growth by the end of fiscal 2027.

Microsoft Cloud services remained the highlight, contributing $63.9 billion or nearly 70 percent of revenue, growing 30 percent year-over-year. Commercial Microsoft 365 cloud revenue rose 18 percent, bolstered by increased revenue per user and sales of premium offerings like Microsoft 365 Copilot and E5/E7 licenses. Consumer cloud revenue also grew 17 percent, driven by subscriber growth and higher per-user revenue.

This reshaped reporting and the solid growth of cloud services underscore Microsoft’s strategic focus on cloud and enterprise offerings amid challenges in hardware and consumer segments. Further details were expected in the company’s quarterly earnings call scheduled shortly after the report’s release.
