TikTok has permanently suspended the advertising account promoting the four-hour Elon Musk documentary due to political content, reflecting ongoing platform resistance to the film's promotion.

The four-hour documentary "Musk," directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney and exploring the life of Elon Musk, faces continued resistance from social media platforms in its advertising efforts. Recently, TikTok permanently suspended the advertising account for the film, citing concerns over political content, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. This suspension marks the latest setback for the documentary’s promotion on digital platforms.

Previously, the film's trailer advertisements were initially rejected by both Meta and YouTube. Meta later admitted the rejection was due to “an error” and allowed the ads to run. Additionally, X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk himself, has refused to carry advertisements for the documentary.

There has also been some hesitation from the film’s international distributor, Universal, regarding the documentary’s release plans. Director Gibney confirmed that while Universal had doubts, it is now proceeding with the launch. "Musk" debuted in a limited release across four theaters before expanding more broadly.

Interestingly, TikTok’s U.S. operations have ownership ties to Larry Ellison, a well-known supporter of former President Donald Trump and business peer to Musk. The documentary’s future streaming release is set for HBO in the coming year, now under the leadership of David Ellison, Larry Ellison’s son, at Paramount/Skydance.

The ban on TikTok adds to the complex landscape the documentary navigates in reaching audiences via major social media platforms, reflecting broader discussions about the interplay between political content and digital advertising policies.
