Atari, through Retro Games and Plaion Replai, announced a refreshed version of the 1983 Atari 800XL computer featuring a mechanical keyboard, joystick, retro programming support, and compatibility with classic 8-bit software.

Atari has introduced a modern remake of its iconic Atari 800XL computer originally launched in 1983. Developed by Retro Games and produced and distributed by Plaion Replai, the updated Atari 800XL aims to bring retro computing to contemporary enthusiasts. Set to begin shipping on April 23, 2027, the revamped system sells for $220 or 220 euros.

This new Atari 800XL model features a full-sized mechanical keyboard, enhancing the tactile experience for users compared to the original. It comes bundled with a joystick, maintaining the classic gaming feel associated with Atari computers. The device includes Atari BASIC programming language, enabling users to engage in retro-style programming on the platform.

Compatibility remains broad, supporting much of the 8-bit software library originally created for Atari PCs. For added convenience, the system includes 25 built-in games and supports various image formats such as cartridges, disks, and tapes.

Users can load their own software using a USB flash drive, with functionalities to save game states and revert to earlier points, which adds modern usability features to the nostalgic hardware.

This release demonstrates Atari’s continued interest in leveraging its heritage by tapping into the vintage computer and gaming market, providing both retro enthusiasts and new audiences a way to experience classic Atari computing in a new form factor.
