Huawei Faces Over $200 Rise in Smartphone Production Costs Due to Memory Price Surge

Huawei's executive director Yu Chengdong reveals that skyrocketing memory prices have pushed up the production cost of each Huawei smartphone by over $200, forcing the company to consider price hikes to sustain its business.

Huawei is grappling with a steep increase in smartphone production costs driven primarily by a sharp rise in memory component prices. According to Huawei’s Executive Director Yu Chengdong, the additional expenses on memory modules alone have elevated the cost of making a single Huawei smartphone by more than $200. Given that Huawei’s devices often come equipped with larger memory capacities, the impact of this cost surge is particularly pronounced for the company compared to some competitors.

Yu Chengdong emphasized that this issue extends beyond Huawei and affects nearly the entire mobile industry. The escalating procurement prices have compelled manufacturers across the sector to re-evaluate the retail prices of their devices. Until now, Huawei has attempted to absorb these increasing costs internally and has been cautious about passing the full burden onto consumers.

However, maintaining this approach is becoming increasingly unsustainable. The executive director noted that the company’s efforts to internally offset the rising material costs have considerably squeezed its profit margins. This has led Huawei to acknowledge the likelihood of implementing price increases on their smartphones to preserve long-term business viability.

Yu stated, “In the future, we will have to raise prices. If we continue to lose money, the business cannot survive over the long term. The company must first survive.” This statement highlights Huawei’s priority to sustain operational stability amid fluctuating component markets.

The situation underscores the challenges smartphone manufacturers face from volatile memory prices, which remain a critical component in device manufacturing. Huawei’s candid remarks signal potential upcoming price adjustments in their smartphone lineup, reflecting broader trends of cost pressures in the global smartphone market.
