Nvidia's board initiates an independent probe into CEO Jensen Huang’s connection to a possible Chinese spy, after Huang admitted to an affair with an executive suspected of espionage. The board states no evidence of security compromise so far.
Nvidia has announced that its board of directors has initiated an independent investigation into its founder and CEO Jensen Huang in response to reports linking him to a possible Chinese espionage operation. The investigation follows disclosures that Huang had an affair with Alice Huang, an executive at Singapore-based chip company Megaspeed. According to media reports and a memo circulated among U.S. policymakers, Alice Huang is alleged to have been recruited by China’s Ministry of State Security to spy on Nvidia’s CEO.
Jensen Huang addressed the situation directly in a company-wide memo, admitting to being unfaithful to his wife and expressing deep remorse for the personal consequences of his actions. He acknowledged having fallen short of his responsibilities both personally and professionally, offering apologies to his family, colleagues, Nvidia’s board, partners, and shareholders.
The Nvidia board stated it has “no reason to believe” that national security interests or company secrets have been compromised as a result of the affair. The ongoing review will be conducted by a committee of independent directors with support from outside legal counsel. Jensen Huang has expressed full support for the investigation and pledged his cooperation.
The company emphasized that it prioritizes U.S. national and economic security, which is central to Nvidia’s and its shareholders’ interests. Confidence remains strong in Huang’s leadership and that of his executive team, with the board committing to provide updates as appropriate.
This development emerges amid heightened tensions between the United States and China around AI chip technology, where Nvidia plays a significant role. The company previously responded to concerns about Huang’s relationship, describing their interactions as “not unusual” and reiterating that classified information is not shared with customers. Furthermore, other industry players have warned employees about potential espionage risks involving personal relationships.
As the investigation proceeds, Nvidia’s board and CEO Huang face the challenge of managing both the integrity of the company and broader national security concerns while maintaining stakeholder confidence.
