Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced plans to invest €1.8 billion in Europe to accelerate AI adoption, adding to €7.2 billion already invested on the continent, with support for local startups and promotion of open-source AI models.

Nvidia's CEO Jensen Huang has unveiled an ambitious investment plan to inject €1.8 billion (around $2 billion) into the European artificial intelligence ecosystem. This funding aims to accelerate the adoption of AI technologies and Nvidia's graphics processor products across the continent.

According to a report from Mobile World Live citing Bloomberg, Huang revealed these plans during an event in Paris on October 13, marking the beginning of a European tour that includes stops in London and Berlin. He emphasized that this fresh capital will complement the €7.2 billion (approximately $8 billion) already committed by Nvidia to European initiatives.

Beyond hardware investments, Huang announced new funding dedicated to several French AI startups, including Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment, and Entalpic. These measures reflect Nvidia’s intent to foster innovation within Europe's AI startup sector.

Huang also highlighted the strategic importance of open-source AI models. He suggested that their reduced costs and enhanced flexibility could help Europe bridge its AI capabilities gap with the United States. He stated, according to Bloomberg, that "open models are important because they can be tailored to different languages and sovereignty needs."

Nvidia maintains a significant partnership with French company Mistral AI, known for developing open-weight AI models. Nvidia has invested in Mistral and supplies accelerator hardware for its data centers.

The investment announcement coincides closely with Nvidia’s upcoming GTC Berlin conference scheduled for October 20 to 22, positioning the company at the forefront of European AI discourse and development.

These investment initiatives illustrate Nvidia’s commitment to deepening its engagement in Europe’s AI landscape, supporting both infrastructure and innovation to foster a competitive, sovereign AI sector within the continent.
