Google will roll out its Financial Services Verification program in the U.S. and Canada by early 2027 to protect users from online financial scams by requiring advertisers to prove regulatory authorization before running financial ads.
Google is enhancing its defenses against financial scam ads by extending its Financial Services Verification program to the United States and Canada starting in early 2027. This initiative builds on safeguards that currently protect around 2 billion internet users across 42 countries and marks the program's first expansion into North American markets.
The new requirements mandate that advertisers in the financial sector demonstrate authorization from relevant official regulators or recognized registries before their ads can appear on Google's platforms. This verification step is designed to prevent scammers from impersonating legitimate banks and financial service providers, thereby mitigating brand impersonation and reducing consumer exposure to fraudulent advertisements.
Google’s approach supplements existing identity verification procedures with specialized checks tailored for financial advertisers. It leverages advanced AI systems that, as of 2025, allowed Google’s Gemini platform to block over 99% of policy-violating ads in real time before users encountered them.
To ensure effective implementation, Google is collaborating with key industry groups such as the American Bankers Association in the U.S. and the Canadian Bankers Association. These partnerships facilitate the use of dedicated registries to verify authorized banks ahead of ad deployment. The company intends a phased, country-specific rollout that respects differing regulatory environments while maintaining robust consumer protections.
Ahead of the 2027 rollout, Google will provide detailed guidance to advertisers regarding acceptable registries, required credentials, and onboarding processes. Advertisers will be notified when verification becomes necessary to comply with the updated policy, ensuring clear communication before enforcement begins.
This expansion reflects Google’s ongoing commitment to maintaining safe, transparent, and reliable advertising platforms. By strengthening measures against financial scams in the U.S. and Canada, Google aims to better protect users’ money and personal information from fraudulent schemes encountered online.
