Microsoft is testing a redesigned Windows Search in Windows 11 that promises faster performance, modern UI, and new capabilities such as inline results previews and direct action commands, including phone message sending through Phone Link integration.
Microsoft is rolling out a significant redesign of the Windows Search experience for Windows 11 as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize core Windows features. Currently in testing with Windows Insiders, the new Windows Search introduces a faster, more responsive interface built on the WinUI 3 framework. According to Anshul Rawat, corporate vice president of the Windows product team, this overhaul focuses on speed without compromising system resources, with early tests showing substantial improvements in both performance and memory usage.
The updated search UI features smooth animations and a large preview pane that displays inline search results, making the experience feel more immediate and decluttered compared to previous iterations. Unlike the current implementation, which often relies on displaying miniature Bing search results after a delay, the new search surfaces answers directly within the interface, akin to modern search experiences on mobile platforms like iOS and Android. This includes quick previews for file types such as PowerPoint presentations and photos.
Beyond enhancements to search speed and visuals, Microsoft has improved the underlying search algorithms to better handle typos and synonyms, thereby improving result relevance. The new Windows Search also acts as a versatile launcher, enabling users to perform device control actions directly via search commands—for example, toggling Bluetooth or dark mode, minimizing windows, or arranging apps side-by-side.
Further integration with Microsoft's Phone Link app extends the search functionality to connected smartphones. Users can issue commands like sending text messages by typing in the Windows Search box, which then routes the action through the linked phone.
Looking ahead to 2027, Microsoft plans to integrate this revamped Search experience into the Windows Start menu, ensuring it adapts seamlessly to different taskbar positions and various Windows configurations. The company aims to make Windows Search more capable with richer contextual information and more intuitive command inputs, improving productivity by enabling users to get things done directly from the search interface. The new Windows Search represents a substantial step toward addressing long-standing user frustrations and bringing Windows 11's search functionality up to modern expectations.
