Porsche previews the Mission S, a mid-engined supercar concept slated as a permanent model above the 911, aligning with its strategy to prioritize high-margin, bespoke sports cars by 2035.

Porsche has revealed its Mission S concept, a new mid-engined supercar that will join its lineup above the iconic 911. Unlike previous limited-run Halo vehicles such as the Carrera GT or 918 Spyder, Porsche intends the Mission S to be a regular production model. This announcement was part of the company's broader turnaround strategy named “Sportwagenschmiede ’35,” aimed at restoring Porsche's profit margins to double digits by the year 2035 through a focus on lower volumes, higher prices, and increased customer individualization.

Recently, Porsche's profitability took a hit, with net margins plunging from an impressive 18 percent three years ago to just around 1 percent last year, prompting this strategic shift. CEO Michael Leiters emphasized the goal of strengthening Porsche's brand by expanding into highly profitable segments with new, desirable models like the Mission S.

The Mission S's design carries aesthetic cues from several classic Porsches including the 917, 928, 959, and GT1, while also evoking modern touches reminiscent of the Aston Martin One-77 and BMW i8. Internally, the concept nods to Porsche's heritage models like the 356 and 550 Spyder with a driver-centric cockpit that integrates haptic and digital feedback mechanisms. Notably, the interior omits a central infotainment screen and passenger display, instead using a dock for smartphones via a MagSafe connector.

Though Porsche has not disclosed specifics about the Mission S's powertrain, the presence of rear exhaust pipes strongly suggests an internal combustion engine configuration. Speculation surrounds a flat-eight engine placement behind the cockpit, echoing the layout of the historic Porsche 908 race car and aligning with rumors about Porsche developing a flat-eight engine. It remains uncertain whether the vehicle will incorporate forced induction or hybrid technology, but Porsche’s recent advances in electric T-Hybrid systems suggest these could be possibilities.

Alongside the Mission S, the company plans new electric and hybrid models, including an electric 718 Boxster/Cayman and a smaller SUV below the Macan, aiming to adapt to evolving market demands while enhancing profitability. However, the restructuring will involve workforce reductions affecting approximately 9,000 employees, part of Volkswagen Group's broader headcount optimization.

The Mission S concept offers a preview of Porsche's future direction, marking a notable shift toward ultra-premium, performance-oriented vehicles that reinforce its position in the luxury sports car segment while addressing economic challenges through targeted innovation and exclusivity.
