A startup named New Matter Inc. has revealed a modern MP3 player, Sudo SP-01, resembling the iconic iPod Classic. However, the product currently exists only in renders and faces doubts over its legitimacy and potential legal challenges.

A new startup, New Matter Inc., registered in August 2026, recently announced the Sudo SP-01 — a modern MP3 player heavily inspired by the legendary iPod Classic. Priced at $250, the aluminum-bodied device features a tactile click-wheel similar to Apple's design, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 64GB of internal storage plus microSD support up to 1TB, and purported Bluetooth connectivity. Users will reportedly be able to load their own music and stream from unnamed services.

Despite the nostalgic appeal, the Sudo SP-01 currently only exists as computer-generated renders and promotional material. The company is accepting pre-orders through its website with a $50 deposit, aiming to deliver units in the fourth quarter of 2027, mainly targeting regions including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand.

The approach has raised eyebrows as New Matter Inc. is an inexperienced startup without a history in hardware production and has chosen to solicit deposits directly rather than use established crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. This has led to suspicions that the project could be a scam aimed at nostalgic consumers rather than a legitimate product launch.

Additionally, given the close resemblance to Apple’s iconic iPod Classic, there is a significant risk of legal action from Apple, which is unlikely to permit unauthorized usage of its design and branding heritage.

While the announcement has sparked curiosity, experts and observers recommend caution before financially committing to the Sudo SP-01. Whether Apple might consider officially reviving the iPod Classic remains an open question, but for now, this modern homage from New Matter remains unproven and uncertain.
