The Pentagon has conditionally approved a $250 million loan to battery materials startup 6K to build a Tennessee factory using their microwave-plasma manufacturing process, aiming to bolster domestic supply chains.

The US Department of Defense has conditionally approved a $250 million loan to battery materials startup 6K, based in North Andover, Massachusetts, to support the construction of a new factory in Tennessee. This facility will leverage 6K's unique microwave-powered plasma process to produce critical battery materials domestically, reducing reliance on Chinese suppliers.

6K’s technology involves using microwaves to heat metals into plasma, which are then deposited directly onto surfaces to form cathode materials – essential components in lithium-ion batteries. This innovative method simplifies the manufacturing process, potentially lowering production costs and increasing efficiency. The process is versatile, compatible with various battery chemistries including lithium iron phosphate (LFP), which is popular for electric vehicles and energy storage.

Originally, 6K planned to open the facility in 2024, supported by a $50 million grant from the Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. However, the Trump administration canceled this grant in a review of Biden-era awards, delaying the project and forcing the company to revise its timeline amid uncertainties in the electric vehicle market.

The Pentagon's loan approval signals growing government interest in securing domestic production capabilities for advanced battery materials, which are critical for both civilian applications and defense technologies. By fostering such manufacturing within the United States, the Department of Defense aims to strengthen supply chain resilience for technologies vital in modern warfare and energy security.

6K’s expansion represents a strategic step in advancing US battery manufacturing infrastructure with cutting-edge materials production techniques. The loan is contingent pending final approvals, but if completed, it would enable 6K to scale its process and contribute significantly to the shrinking reliance on foreign sources for essential battery components.
