Singapore and Germany commit to joint development of industrial AI, focusing on sector-specific solutions like healthcare and manufacturing, emphasizing safe, human-centered technology.

Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has highlighted the city-state's strategic focus on industrial artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing its comparative advantages in applying AI to specific sectors rather than developing general-purpose AI technologies led by US and Chinese companies. Speaking about a collaboration with Germany, Wong outlined Singapore’s strengths including its small, compact size and high societal connectivity, as well as clear legal frameworks and strong intellectual property protections. These factors position Singapore to excel in deploying AI in targeted industries such as healthcare, logistics, finance, and advanced manufacturing.

This bilateral partnership was underscored during discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with both leaders prioritizing industrial AI development as a cornerstone for future cooperation. They agreed on the necessity of addressing AI risks by ensuring the technology’s development remains safe, trusted, and human-centered.

Beyond industrial AI, the two countries plan to collaborate on advanced manufacturing, sustainable technologies, semiconductors, quantum computing, and space technologies, signaling a broad high-tech partnership. Prime Minister Wong predicted that the joint efforts would accelerate the deployment of robotics and automation in manufacturing and logistics, subsequently impacting other economic sectors.

The collaboration also rests on existing robust trade agreements and longstanding business relationships between Singaporean and German companies. Wong characterized Europe, including Germany, as a solid investment destination for the long term, reinforcing the strategic dimension of this cooperation.

This alliance demonstrates Singapore’s ambition to carve out a meaningful role in applied AI, leveraging sector-specific advantages and international partnerships to compete in the global technology landscape while ensuring ethical and secure AI implementation.
