Virgin Media O2 and Nokia's AI-driven 5G RAN test enhanced spectral efficiency by about 20% at London Paddington, enabling higher data throughput and improved network performance during high demand.

UK operator Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) reported approximately a 20% improvement in spectral efficiency by integrating artificial intelligence technology into the 5G radio access network (RAN) during a live trial with Nokia. The test took place at London Paddington rail station, a busy transport hub, and is claimed to be the first of its kind in the UK.

The trial employed AI to predict and optimize the allocation of radio resources dynamically as network conditions and user demand fluctuated. By leveraging AI, VMO2 was able to carry a greater volume of data over the existing spectrum, resulting in significant throughput gains especially during peak usage periods.

This approach helps address surging data consumption, enabling faster downloads and higher quality streaming while reducing buffering in congested locations. VMO2's Chief Technology Officer, Jeanie York, highlighted the necessity for smarter spectrum and infrastructure utilization as data demand continues to escalate.

She stated, "This live trial with Nokia showed how AI can improve network efficiency and help us respond more effectively to changing customer demand. By making better use of existing network resources, we can deliver a better experience for customers while supporting future traffic growth."

The project forms part of VMO2’s ongoing network transformation initiatives, aiming to enhance operational efficiency and customer experience.

Emma Falck, Nokia’s President of Mobile Networks, emphasized the trial’s demonstration of AI’s transition from experimental use to generating measurable benefits in live networks, noting the significant potential for AI-native networks to enhance service quality and efficiency.

The development follows a growing industry focus on AI’s application in the RAN, with Nokia recently engaging in partnerships to advance AI-driven network solutions. This joint effort underscores the increasing role of AI in managing complex, high-demand wireless environments efficiently.
