Smartphone shipments fell 22% in Q3 2026 to a record low of 255.3 million units, pressured by soaring memory costs linked to AI demand, with market recovery unlikely before 2028.

The global smartphone market experienced its steepest quarterly decline to date in the third quarter of 2026, as shipments dropped by 22% compared to the previous year, according to research from IDC. The industry shipped just 255.3 million units in this period, marking a significant contraction attributed primarily to an ongoing AI-driven memory crisis.

Nabila Popal, IDC's senior research director, described the drop as a long-anticipated sharp downturn, cautioning that the market has likely not yet hit its lowest point. "Memory costs have surged approximately 350% since last year and are still rising, creating substantial pressure on vendor margins and shipments," Popal explained. Although inflationary pressures on memory components are beginning to ease, elevated costs in other critical parts continue to challenge manufacturers.

This component cost inflation is expected to hamper smartphone market growth throughout 2027, with a recovery potentially delayed until 2028 or later. Despite the challenging environment, top vendors Samsung and Apple maintained their leading positions with market shares of 22.6% and 22.4% respectively, albeit with lower shipment volumes. In contrast, Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo faced significant double-digit declines in market share.

Kiranjeet Kaur, IDC's associate research director for Worldwide Devices, noted that some manufacturers have increased production plans anticipating a tighter component supply in 2027. She warned that if consumer demand remains weak, this could lead to excess inventory, adding further risk to market forecasts.

The current crisis stems largely from increased AI adoption, which has triggered unprecedented demand and shortages for memory components vital to smartphone production. The ripple effects highlight the vulnerability of the smartphone supply chain to fluctuations in key semiconductor elements. Industry watchers will monitor closely how vendors and suppliers navigate this period of elevated costs and market strain over the coming years.
