Global smartphone shipments fell 22% year-on-year in Q3 2026, reaching a historic quarterly low, largely due to soaring memory costs linked to AI demand. Analysts predict continued market weakness until at least 2028.
Global smartphone shipments declined sharply in the third quarter of 2026, dropping 22% year-on-year to 255.3 million units, the largest quarterly fall recorded to date according to IDC. This downturn is primarily attributed to a memory supply crisis driven by the surge in demand for artificial intelligence technologies.
IDC's Senior Research Director, Nabila Popal, noted that the smartphone industry had been preparing for this decline and that it has now materialized. She warned that the market has not yet bottomed out, highlighting that memory component costs have soared approximately 350% over the past year and continue to rise, putting significant pressure on supplier margins and shipments.
While price inflation for memory is beginning to ease, Popal emphasized that costs remain high for other critical components, compounding the industry's challenges. Consequently, IDC forecasts market growth to remain limited through 2027, with a potential recovery delayed until at least 2028.
Despite the overall shipment decline, the leading smartphone manufacturers maintained their market positions with minor changes compared to the previous quarter. Samsung and Apple increased their market shares to 22.6% and 22.4% respectively, even though both saw decreases in quarterly shipments. Xiaomi, Vivo, and Oppo followed but experienced double-digit market share declines.
Associate Research Director Kiranjeet Kaur of IDC’s Worldwide Devices team pointed out that some manufacturers have increased production plans amidst concerns over potential component shortages expected in 2027. She cautioned that if demand remains weak, this could result in inventory build-up in 2027, posing further downside risks to shipment forecasts for that year.
This significant slump in smartphone shipments underlines the ongoing supply chain and cost pressures currently shaping the global mobile device market, driven largely by the ripple effects of advancements and increased demands in artificial intelligence.
