Debian Linux invites artists to submit artwork for its next release, Forky (Debian 14), continuing its tradition of community-designed themes. Submissions are open until November 26.
The Debian Linux project has officially opened submissions for community artwork intended for its forthcoming major release, Debian 14, codenamed "Forky." This initiative continues Debian's commitment to incorporating community contributions into its operating system's visual identity, following a tradition where artwork plays a significant role in the user experience.
Artists are encouraged to submit original designs that embody a distinctly "Debian" aesthetic. The artwork will be featured prominently in key user interface elements such as boot screens, login prompts, and desktop wallpapers, potentially reaching millions of users worldwide. A critical criterion for submissions is that the artwork integrates seamlessly without requiring any modifications to Debian's core software and remains visually appealing over an extended period.
This call for submissions follows the success of the previous Debian 13 release, known as Trixie, whose default theme, "Ceratopsian," created by Elise Couper, cleverly referenced a character from the Toy Story film series, aligning with Debian's tradition of release names inspired by the franchise. With Forky being the next release inspired by Toy Story 4, the Debian team encourages artists to creatively embrace the theme while avoiding overly complex designs that might lead to user fatigue.
Debian celebrated its 33rd anniversary in August 2026 and continues its mission as a highly versatile, "universal operating system" supporting a broad range of hardware architectures. Forky is currently in the latter stages of development, with the selection of artwork marking a key milestone prior to its official release.
Interested contributors have until November 26 to submit their artwork. Detailed guidelines and submission requirements are available on the Debian Wiki, ensuring contributors have the resources needed for a successful entry. This opportunity highlights Debian’s ongoing dedication to community engagement and creative involvement in shaping the operating system’s identity.
