Wireless Broadband Alliance Advocates for Wi-Fi Integration as Core of 6G Networks

The Wireless Broadband Alliance urges the telecom industry to integrate Wi-Fi into 6G standards, highlighting Wi-Fi's role in achieving ubiquitous indoor and outdoor connectivity while reducing costs and complexity.
The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), a key Wi-Fi industry group, has called for Wi-Fi to be a fundamental component of future 6G connectivity standards, emphasizing the technology's widespread availability and critical role in delivering seamless coverage. According to WBA president and CEO Tiago Rodrigues, Wi-Fi is essential for achieving the ubiquitous coverage goals envisioned for 6G, particularly due to its dominance in providing indoor connectivity.
The WBA recently published a report outlining why Wi-Fi should be integrated at the core of 6G networks, proposing various methods for incorporation that prioritize cost-effectiveness and operational simplicity. The organization stresses the importance of convergence between Wi-Fi and mobile networks to achieve a consistent user experience and deep indoor coverage, as defined by the ITU's IMT-2030 framework for 6G.
A key aspect of the WBA's vision involves evolving access models to support agnostic setups capable of seamlessly operating on either Wi-Fi or mobile networks, depending on requirements. Such convergence efforts must also address commercial factors like network economics, improved customer experience, greater automation, and new service opportunities, promising benefits for both operators and device manufacturers.
The WBA points out that failing to manage costs has hindered prior attempts to combine Wi-Fi with 4G and 5G technologies. Overcoming these challenges in the 6G era could unlock significant advancements in autonomous networks, industrial connectivity, emergency services, and digital logistics.
Overall, the Wireless Broadband Alliance advocates that integrating Wi-Fi as a core element of 6G standards is instrumental for achieving the next generation of pervasive and reliable connectivity.
