United Airlines has launched a native Spotify app on seatback entertainment systems, letting passengers stream personalized music via Starlink satellite Wi-Fi across its fleet, marking a major upgrade in in-flight entertainment.

United Airlines has introduced a custom, native Spotify application for its seatback entertainment systems, allowing passengers to log into their personal accounts and stream their own music libraries, playlists, and video podcasts during flights at cruising altitudes around 35,000 feet. This innovative feature is powered by Starlink’s satellite-based Wi-Fi network, currently being installed throughout United’s entire fleet.

This development represents a significant shift in the legacy of in-flight entertainment technology, moving away from outdated systems that relied on locally stored content and basic audio setups. Previously, due to lack of internet connectivity, airlines could only offer a limited selection of preloaded movies and music. United’s integration of Starlink’s high-speed internet enables live streaming akin to home internet experiences.

United initially partnered with Spotify over a year ago to preload some music collections on seatback displays but found that enabling passengers to access their own Spotify accounts and stream personal content was a more compelling, personalized approach. Mark Muren, United’s managing director for product marketing, described this as the “supreme, perfect personalization” by offering each customer access to their specific account material.

Grant Milstead, United’s vice president for digital, emphasized that this seamless experience was only possible due to Starlink’s extensive constellation of over 11,000 low Earth orbit satellites. The shorter signal distances reduce latency significantly compared to traditional geostationary satellites, providing fast, reliable, and uninterrupted connectivity. United selected Starlink for its robust global coverage, including challenging routes over polar regions used for transatlantic and transpacific flights.

The enhanced Wi-Fi allows passengers not only to stream Spotify content through seatback screens but also on their personal mobile devices. United plans to expand its offerings to include additional third-party streaming apps, using the Spotify integration as a blueprint for future partnerships.

Other major airlines, such as American, Qatar, Emirates, Lufthansa, Air France, and British Airways, are also adopting Starlink for in-flight connectivity, while Delta is partnering with Amazon's low Earth orbit network, and JetBlue relies on Viasat's Fly-Fi service. Industry-wide improvements in satellite Wi-Fi will likely make United’s current offerings standard soon, but the airline aims to differentiate itself through superior technological experiences and the convenience of seamless app integration on seatback displays.

United acknowledges that fast Wi-Fi will become ubiquitous across airlines in time, but the combination of Starlink’s advanced network and personalized streaming apps positions it at the forefront of modern in-flight entertainment innovation.
