Apple updates its iMac lineup with the new M6 chip, featuring a 10-core CPU and GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, starting at $1,499. This refresh brings significant performance gains while maintaining the familiar design.

Apple has introduced a new generation of its iMac desktop computers, now powered by the company’s advanced M6 chip. This update, announced shortly before Apple’s upcoming “Pro and Tell” event scheduled for Wednesday, marks a performance-focused refresh to the all-in-one iMac line. It follows the previous M4 iMac update two years ago, skipping the M5 series entirely to deliver a more substantial hardware improvement.

The key upgrade is the integration of Apple’s M6 chip, notable for being the company's first 2-nanometer (nm) processor. This chip includes a 10-core CPU and a matching 10-core GPU, an increase from the 8-core CPU featured in the earlier M4-equipped iMacs. Additionally, the M6 features a dual 16-core Neural Engine, which enhances on-device AI processing capabilities, thus potentially improving tasks that rely on machine learning.

Despite these internal enhancements, the iMac’s external design remains largely unchanged, maintaining the colorful aesthetic introduced with the previous generation. Pricing for the refreshed iMac starts at $1,499, aligning it with the prior model’s market segment.

The M6 chip debuted previously in the Mac Mini released in August, and Apple is now extending this chipset to the iMac, signaling the company's continued shift towards more efficient and powerful in-house silicon across its product lines. This update aims to provide users with better performance for professional and creative workflows, as well as improved AI task handling that benefits from the Neural Engine’s capabilities.

As of now, detailed technical specifications and configuration options beyond the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine core counts have not been disclosed. Apple’s forthcoming event may provide further insight into the iMac’s features and potential new capabilities accompanying this refresh.
