Apple introduces a refreshed iPad Mini featuring an 8.5-inch OLED display and the powerful A20 Pro chip, enhancing Siri functionality and video calling, priced from $699 for the Wi-Fi model.
Apple has unveiled an updated version of its iPad Mini, featuring a larger 8.5-inch OLED display that marks a significant upgrade from previous models. The announcement came just days before the company’s anticipated "Pro and tell" event. The new iPad Mini starts at $699 for the Wi-Fi-only option, positioning it as a premium tablet in Apple’s compact lineup.
Beyond the striking OLED display, this iteration incorporates the advanced A20 Pro chip. According to Apple, this chipset enables improved artificial intelligence features, including enhanced Siri voice assistant capabilities such as customizable expressiveness and speech pace. These AI improvements suggest a more personalized user experience.
Apple has also repositioned the iPad Mini’s 12-megapixel front-facing camera from the shorter edge to the longer edge of the device. This change optimizes the device for video calls when held in landscape orientation, enhancing the usability for virtual meetings and calls.
This refreshed iPad Mini follows the 7th-generation version released earlier in 2024, which came three years after the 6th-generation model. The previous 7th-gen model was primarily a specification update, featuring the A17 Pro chip, higher base storage of 128GB, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro, starting at $499. However, some critics noted a feeling that the prior model was designed more around manufacturing considerations than user appeal.
Apple’s latest update to the iPad Mini lineup appears to address some of these critiques by focusing on a more substantial display upgrade and improved processor capabilities. The release also precedes several anticipated Apple product launches rumored for the same week, including new MacBook Pro models with touchscreen features and upgraded M6 processors, as well as a refreshed iMac lineup.
The new iPad Mini is positioned as a compact, powerful device combining portability with advanced technology enhancements, aiming to attract both casual users and professionals seeking a smaller tablet option with premium features.
