Etsy has implemented new policies requiring sellers to disclose AI use in listings and provide unedited photos of actual products to reduce misleading AI-generated content on its platform.

Etsy, the online marketplace known for handmade and vintage goods, is introducing stricter policies to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in product listings. The company aims to address concerns from buyers and sellers about the prevalence and transparency of AI-generated content, often referred to as "AI slop," across the platform.

Etsy states that many buyers find it difficult to identify which items are AI-generated, while sellers worry about their hand-crafted works being displayed alongside misleading AI-created products. To combat this, Etsy's new rules require every listing to include at least one unedited photograph of the actual physical item placed against a real background. These primary images must accurately represent what buyers will receive. While additional photos can be digitally or AI-edited, they must still reflect the true physical product. Etsy shared examples to highlight unacceptable listings that use overly altered or AI-generated imagery.

When sellers upload images, Etsy will detect suspected AI-generated content and prompt the seller to disclose AI use through a pop-up notification. This measure is designed to enhance buyer awareness. Furthermore, if buyers report receiving items that differ materially from their listing photos, sellers may be liable for refunds.

The new guidelines also extend to sellers offering "functional guides," such as patterns, recipes, or instructions. Etsy requires these to be the seller's own original work, not AI-generated, and sellers must provide evidence of an actual result produced using the guide's instructions. Additionally, listings created by bots are prohibited on the platform.

Despite the crackdown, Etsy continues to allow the sale of AI-generated art, provided the seller clearly discloses the use of AI in its creation. This move underscores Etsy's attempt to balance innovation with authenticity and transparency.

These policy changes reflect Etsy's response to evolving concerns about AI-generated content in online marketplaces, setting clearer standards for the use and disclosure of AI to maintain trust between buyers and sellers. As AI tools become more widespread, Etsy's approach could serve as a model for other e-commerce platforms grappling with similar issues.
