AT&T has finalized the sale of its Mexican telecom business to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion, exiting the market after a decade. The deal will give both firms equal ownership and is expected to close in early 2027.

In a strategic shift, AT&T has completed the formal sale of its Mexican telecommunications operations to Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for approximately $2 billion. This move marks the end of AT&T's decade-long effort to establish a foothold in Mexico's competitive telecom sector, historically dominated by América Móvil, owned by Carlos Slim.

AT&T entered the Mexican market in 2015 following regulatory reforms, acquiring local carriers Iusacell and Nextel for a combined $4.4 billion. These were subsequently merged into the AT&T México brand. However, the U.S. telecom giant decided to divest from Mexico by 2025 to concentrate investment domestically on expanding mobile and fiber optic networks, where it continues to report significant progress.

Under the terms of the sale, Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings will each hold a 50% stake in the newly structured AT&T México. This joint ownership establishes Grupo Televisa as the first operator in Mexico to offer an integrated suite of services including mobile telephony, internet, pay television, and fixed-line telephone services.

As of December 31, 2025, AT&T México maintained a 16% share of the Mexican mobile subscriber market, with 24.7 million subscribers, compared to Telcel's 58%, the leading brand under América Móvil.

AT&T CEO John Stankey emphasized the importance of converged networks and dense fiber infrastructure as foundational to the future of artificial intelligence. He noted that the transaction positions AT&T México to participate effectively in these developments and aligns with AT&T's broader strategy to focus capital investments on growth opportunities within the United States.

Regulatory approvals are pending, with the transaction expected to finalize in the first quarter of 2027. This divestment follows another exit from the Mexican telecom market by Telefónica, which sold its operations there to an investor consortium for $450 million earlier in 2026.

With this transition, Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings aim to accelerate growth and innovation within Mexico's telecom landscape, leveraging the assets and infrastructure formerly operated by AT&T México.
