NTT Docomo and Abside Networks have partnered to develop AI-powered communications networks via high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), targeting enhanced connectivity beyond terrestrial coverage areas.
Japanese telecom operator NTT Docomo and US-based network equipment maker Abside Networks have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore next-generation, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven networks utilizing high-altitude platform stations (HAPS). These platforms operate in the stratosphere at approximately 20 kilometers altitude, serving as unmanned stations to provide wide-area network coverage, especially in regions difficult to access with conventional terrestrial infrastructure such as mountainous and maritime areas.
The collaboration focuses on developing system architecture and network control strategies for HAPS, integrating AI to predict network demand and manage radio beamforming, spectrum allocation, capacity, and interference within stratospheric radio access networks (RAN). Additionally, the partners will investigate data collection methods related to network quality, operational metrics, stratospheric sensing, and how this data can be integrated with external applications and services.
This initiative aligns with NTT Docomo’s broader ambition to build a three-dimensional communications infrastructure that combines AI with non-terrestrial network (NTN) technologies, including HAPS, terrestrial networks, and space-based systems. The goal is to deliver extensive, high-capacity connectivity capable of supporting the increasing demand driven by expanding AI applications.
NTT Docomo has undertaken research and demonstration projects to enable HAPS-based communications but notes that the unique stratospheric environment necessitates specialized RAN technologies and equipment. Abside contributes expertise by developing radio systems with large antenna arrays for precise beam control and an AI-powered software platform designed for integrated management of networks spanning ground, stratosphere, and space.
Abside's experience includes prior involvement in Google’s Project Loon and ongoing development of HAPS equipment, NTN technologies, and AI-based network control solutions. This partnership seeks to advance the technological foundation for reliable and efficient stratospheric communications, potentially expanding network reach to underserved areas and enhancing overall connectivity infrastructure.
