Following SpaceX's announcement to expand Starlink Mobile with low-frequency spectrum and satellite hybrid coverage, US telecom giants AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile saw their shares drop about 7%.

On October 8, 2026, shares of the three largest American telecom operators—AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile—declined approximately 7% amid news of SpaceX's ambitious plans to expand its Starlink Mobile network. Investors reacted strongly to SpaceX's strategy to build a mobile network capable of delivering continuous coverage both indoors and outdoors, including areas where traditional cellular service is unavailable.

SpaceX recently purchased 800 MHz of low-frequency spectrum across the United States from Grain Management. Low-frequency bands are known for better building penetration, which is expected to help close coverage gaps in existing cellular networks.

By integrating terrestrial networks with its extensive satellite infrastructure, SpaceX aims to offer nationwide mobile services reaching remote regions and so-called dead zones, areas traditionally underserved by cellular providers.

Further enabling this expansion, SpaceX seeks approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to deploy the Starlink Mobile Gen2 satellite constellation comprising up to 15,000 satellites. According to company declarations, this next-generation architecture could increase network throughput by over a hundredfold and provide hybrid satellite-terrestrial coverage.

Significantly, Starlink Mobile plans to allow direct connections from standard smartphones without the need for specialized hardware, presenting a potential disruptive challenge to incumbent mobile operators.

This integration of satellite and terrestrial technologies reflects SpaceX’s objective to transform Starlink from a satellite broadband provider into a comprehensive mobile operator. The immediate market reaction suggests investor concerns over the competitive impact on established telecom companies.

While these plans are subject to regulatory approval and technical implementation, they illustrate an evolving landscape in U.S. wireless communications with emerging hybrid networks poised to enhance coverage and capacity in previously difficult areas.
