Chunghwa Telecom partners with New Taipei City Fire Department to use drones for transporting blood supplies, aiming to enhance smart healthcare logistics in remote and mountainous regions.

Taiwan’s Chunghwa Telecom has embarked on an innovative collaboration to utilize drones for the delivery of blood supplies, marking a novel approach to improving emergency medical logistics. Under a memorandum of understanding with the New Taipei City Fire Department, the companies will conduct trials using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transport blood along northern coastal and mountainous areas. The objective is to assess whether drone delivery can enhance the efficiency of medical resource allocation in hard-to-reach regions.

Chunghwa Telecom’s New Taipei Operations Office is responsible for providing the necessary mobile and fixed network connectivity to support drone operations. This includes establishing smart cold chain systems to ensure the blood supplies are maintained at appropriate temperatures during transit and managing technical evaluations of the UAV systems. The operator will also coordinate UAV integration activities such as flight monitoring, route planning, and securing airspace permissions.

The partnership aims to secure a more reliable supply of blood and potentially other medical resources, particularly in emergency scenarios where traditional delivery methods may be slow or impractical. Beyond the immediate trials, both parties intend to develop standard operating procedures and strengthen the integration of drone logistics with existing emergency service infrastructures.

Chunghwa Telecom emphasizes that this initiative represents an effective convergence of government, healthcare, and technology sectors. It showcases how smart logistics enabled by drones can be leveraged to enhance emergency medical services. The project could serve as a model for expanding UAV applications in healthcare delivery, particularly in geographically challenging environments where timely access to medical supplies is critical.
