Google has launched Gemini on Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, offering drivers personalized, hands-free help by securely connecting to their Google apps for tailored answers while prioritizing privacy.

On October 20, 2026, Google introduced the Gemini AI assistant as an integrated feature on Android Auto and in vehicles equipped with Google built-in, enabling drivers worldwide to receive personalized support without taking their hands off the wheel or eyes off the road. This new capability centers on 'Personal Intelligence,' an enhancement that allows Gemini to securely access and synthesize information from a driver’s Google ecosystem—including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube, and Search—to deliver uniquely tailored answers to complex questions.

Users who opt in through Gemini settings can connect their preferred Google apps, allowing the assistant to fetch relevant details without manual input. For example, a driver can ask, “What’s my flight gate? And is my flight on time?” and receive a comprehensive response drawn from their confirmation emails and live flight data. When seeking dining options, a query like, “Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe,” prompts Gemini to generate personalized suggestions aligned with the user’s preferences and dietary restrictions.

The system supports natural language interaction, simplifying common tasks such as navigating to appointments or recalling locations from photos. Drivers can say, “Take me to my doctor’s appointment,” or, “Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there,” enabling hands-free retrieval without searching manually through apps or files.

Privacy is a foundational aspect of this feature. Personal Intelligence only activates with explicit user permission, and users retain full control over which apps Gemini can access, with easy toggle options in settings. Additionally, when using cars with Google built-in, personal data responses are shared only while the phone is connected in the vehicle, ensuring contextual and secure information delivery.

Even without activating Personal Intelligence, drivers continue to benefit from standard functionalities like navigation, music playback, calling, and general queries, although the responses will not be personalized.

The rollout of Personal Intelligence began on October 20, 2026, starting with Android Auto and expanding to more cars with Google built-in in the following months. Existing Gemini users who have enabled Personal Intelligence will see these personalized features extend seamlessly into the automotive context. Google’s Gemini is positioned as an intelligent co-pilot designed to make driving safer and more convenient by enabling natural-language, customized assistance that respects user privacy.
