Yelp's new AI feature lets users have a voice agent call restaurants to check wait times and deliver results via text. The app also updates its AI assistant with custom reminders, OpenTable booking, and personalized weekly suggestions.

Yelp is significantly upgrading its app by embedding new artificial intelligence features designed to improve user experience in restaurant discovery and service interaction. One of the most notable additions is the "Check for Me" feature, which enables users to have an AI voice agent place calls to restaurants on their behalf to inquire about current wait times. After entering party size and phone number on the restaurant’s app page, users receive a text message with the wait time details, empowering them to decide whether to visit a given restaurant without needing to call directly themselves.

This initiative follows last year’s launch of Yelp’s voice solution for restaurants and service providers, now expanding to fulfill consumer-side engagement. However, Yelp notes the possibility of communication complexities if an AI agent needs to interact with a restaurant’s automated system, which could impact the call’s effectiveness.

Additionally, Yelp’s AI assistant has seen several improvements. A new integration with OpenTable allows users to book reservations seamlessly without leaving the Yelp app. The assistant has also gained enhanced personalization capabilities, remembering preferences mentioned in prior conversations to tailor recommendations better. Users can access their interaction history for the past 30 days within the app, with plans for extended history access forthcoming.

The assistant now supports custom reminders, such as prompting users with weekend activity suggestions each Friday. Yelp has also introduced user-managed lists to organize experiences, including "Been Here" and "Want to Go" categories. These lists can be filtered by location, category, and cuisine; reordered; annotated with notes; and shared with others.

Looking ahead, Yelp will launch weekly personalized recommendations aligned with users' saved items and rankings. The app’s list management section will receive a facelift along with the introduction of a map view later in the year, enhancing discovery and planning.

Beyond consumer features, Yelp is expanding AI-driven business tools with Smart Lead Reply, a paid service costing $30 monthly aimed at helping businesses automate customer engagement and lead qualification through AI-assisted responses. This move aligns with broader industry efforts by companies like Meta to support small businesses in managing customer inquiries through AI technologies.

Overall, these developments highlight Yelp’s strategy of integrating AI to streamline how users discover dining options, make reservations, and stay informed, while simultaneously offering businesses AI-powered solutions to better connect with their customers.
