Epic Games previews a major update to its PC launcher, featuring AI-assisted development, improved speed, and Linux support, aligned with the company’s broader AI integration strategy.
Epic Games has introduced a significant refresh of its PC games launcher, now available in preview on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. The new launcher boasts greatly improved performance, described by the company as "way faster" and more responsive than its predecessor, while also featuring a redesigned interface. Notably, this update brings official Linux support, marking a first for the Epic Games Launcher.
The development of this new launcher spanned most of the current year, leveraging artificial intelligence as a key tool throughout the process. Martin Keely, Epic’s Vice President and General Manager of the Epic Games Store and Epic Online Services, explained that AI was instrumental in replicating core functionality and enhancing testing efficiency. Though AI-generated code played a role, the development team maintained oversight and supervision, contradicting earlier reports that suggested a complete move away from hand-written code.
Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney recently announced a strategic pivot focusing on maximizing AI acceleration across the company’s development efforts. This approach aims not to reduce staffing but to empower developers to create more and better content, benefitting users of the Unreal Engine and other platforms. The new launcher serves as an early example of the results this shift can achieve, demonstrating both faster development cycles and improved software output.
Alongside launching the Linux-compatible Epic Games Launcher, Epic also revealed plans to bring Fortnite to Linux through the new client, broadening the game’s accessibility. The current launcher version will remain available until the new version reaches stability and feature parity across all necessary systems. A firm timeline for mandatory migration has not been specified.
This update comes amid recent significant layoffs at Epic Games, which Sweeney clarified are unrelated to the company’s AI initiatives. Instead, the push toward AI-assisted development is seen as a way to boost productivity and support more creative output from the remaining team.
In sum, Epic’s new launcher preview reflects the company’s commitment to integrating AI tools in game development and software delivery, promising enhanced gaming experiences and more agile development workflows in the near future.
