NVIDIA pledges $250 million over five years to advance agentic safety and security AI research in the UK, while supporting diverse industry applications from healthcare to quantum computing.
NVIDIA has announced a significant commitment of $250 million over five years aimed at enhancing the United Kingdom's leadership in agentic safety and security artificial intelligence (AI) research. This initiative will provide approximately $50 million annually in accelerated computing resources, delivered through UK-based cloud partners, to support fundamental and applied research across numerous institutions and industries.
The investment targets several key UK research organizations including the British Open-Ended Learning and Discovery Lab (BOLD) at Oxford University, the Science of Fundamental AI Research Lab (SOFAIR) at University College London, and Imperial College London. These groups focus on advancing AI that can safely interact and adapt alongside people, explore new AI architectures, and prioritize engineering safety in robotics.
NVIDIA's CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of co-developing AI capabilities alongside safety measures, stating that this funding equips UK researchers to develop and test safeguards for increasingly capable AI systems. UK officials, including AI Minister Kanishka Narayan and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, highlighted the donation as a boost for Britain’s AI innovation ecosystem and its safe utilization.
Beyond foundational research, the UK's AI ecosystem is utilizing NVIDIA technologies across sectors. Fuse Energy employs NVIDIA B300 Blackwell Ultra infrastructure for AI-driven customer services covering hundreds of thousands of households. Healthcare companies like OneAdvanced and Speechmatics are deploying fine-tuned large language models and advanced speech recognition tools for the National Health Service, improving clinical workflows and patient care.
Efforts in smart cities are underway with Liverpool City Region developing an NVIDIA-powered "City Brain" to serve multiple local authorities, while financial services institutions like Lloyds and NatWest build AI models on sovereign cloud infrastructure for enhanced analytics and customer interaction. In quantum computing, UK startup Riverlane uses GPUs to accelerate quantum error correction research, integrating AI and quantum hardware developments.
Overall, NVIDIA’s commitment reinforces the UK's position as a hub for AI innovation, bridging cutting-edge research with practical applications in science, healthcare, finance, and civic services. The program supports over 3,100 UK startups in NVIDIA’s Inception program and reflects a growing scale of AI deployment across industries, aligned with the UK's strategic goals for trustworthy and inclusive AI development.
