Google updates Play with AI Studio for building private custom apps, AI-driven discovery via Ask Play and Gamer DNA, plus social features like 48-hour Sprints and expanded device support.

On October 13, 2026, Google announced major enhancements to Google Play designed to empower users to create, discover, and engage with apps and games more personally and seamlessly. The centerpiece is Google AI Studio, a new suite that enables users to build and run custom Android applications privately on their own devices. These personal apps do not require a developer account and remain separate from the public Play Store catalog, enhancing privacy and security. Initially available in select markets including the U.S. for users aged 18 and older, Google plans to roll out functionality allowing sharing of apps with close contacts before an option to graduate apps to professional developer status with standard Trust & Safety reviews.

Content discovery is boosted by AI-powered tools such as "Ask Play," which provides instant tailored app recommendations and side-by-side app comparisons highlighting key differences and user sentiment. Additionally, "Play in Gemini" integration will soon bring Google Play content directly into Gemini conversations. A novel "Gamer DNA" analysis underpins the new "Game Finder" feature, offering game recommendations finely tuned to users’ play styles and preferences. Game Finder also displays trends, peer engagement, and community review summaries to guide choices. Users can curate or explore "Game Playlists" to share collections.

Social gaming experiences are enhanced with "Sprints," 48-hour micro-challenges that connect small player groups for competitive sessions, and "Sidekick," an in-game overlay allowing quick 30-second gameplay recording. Community Posts support real-time player Q&A on game pages with auto-translation, and will soon extend to developer announcements.

Google Play’s reach expands beyond mobile phones to cars, large screens, XR devices, and PCs. Several PC game titles like Dave the Diver and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun are joining the platform, supporting cross-device play and cloud saves. The Game Trials program is also extending to PC to allow limited-time trials of premium games.

The updated Google Play Points program enhances user rewards through "Play Fest," a week-long event featuring point multipliers, in-game items, developer offers, and sweepstakes for real-world prizes. Family safety remains a priority, with new features allowing sharing of age ranges via Play’s Family Link for safer, age-appropriate app experiences.

These changes illustrate Google’s commitment to a more personalized, creative, and socially connected ecosystem on Google Play, leveraging AI innovations while maintaining robust security and privacy standards.
