Developer Brandon Thomas launched ArtCraft, a suite of seven AI-driven open source apps mimicking Adobe Creative Cloud software with promises of near feature parity soon.
In October 2026, software developer Brandon Thomas introduced ArtCraft, an ambitious open source suite designed to replicate Adobe’s flagship Creative Cloud applications. Built using Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 and coded primarily in Rust—with WebAssembly support for browsers—the project aims to offer free, high-fidelity, cross-platform alternatives to Adobe’s Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Thomas, who has over a decade of experience in Rust projects, began ArtCraft last year as a controllable AI tool for artists, enabling precise editing of AI-generated images and videos. Recently, the project pivoted toward recreating the complete Adobe toolset's look, feel, and functionality through AI-assisted reverse engineering.
Announcing the software in Reddit and Hacker News discussions, Thomas described the current releases as “super early alpha” versions that still lack many features but committed to achieving 100% feature parity within about a month, and 99% parity within a few months. Despite community critiques highlighting the software’s present shortcomings, Thomas remains confident that the apps will become functionally equivalent or even superior to Adobe’s proprietary offerings.
ArtCraft is released under MIT and Apache licenses and will be financially supported by selling token-based access to its AI-driven image generation model and integrated development environment, ensuring continual development beyond a small-team hobby project. Thomas envisions this as part of a broader movement empowered by AI tools, enabling developers to rapidly create open source replacements for widely used paid software, potentially transforming the software landscape by removing advertising and promoting user ownership of technology.
While similar reverse engineering efforts are generally legal when clean-room coded, the close mimicry of Adobe’s user interface and design may invite legal scrutiny concerning trade dress infringement. Nonetheless, Thomas’s project exemplifies how AI-generated coding aids can dramatically accelerate the recreation and innovation of complex software systems.
ArtCraft joins an extensive ecosystem of Adobe alternatives, ranging from established open source projects like GIMP and Krita for image editing, to emerging AI-powered tools. This ongoing trend reflects growing user demand for accessible, cost-free creative tools with the flexibility and power of commercial software. As ArtCraft progresses beyond alpha, it could significantly impact the professional creative software market by providing a free, open, and AI-enhanced alternative to Adobe’s dominant suite.
