Amazon introduces the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, a premium Android device featuring full Google Play support and a unique Corning Nanomatte screen that minimizes glare for easy viewing in bright light. Priced from $499, it aims to offer a more compelling tablet experience with deep Alexa integration.
Amazon, traditionally known for its budget-friendly Fire tablets, has unveiled the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, marking a move towards a more premium Android tablet offering. Priced at $499 for the standard glossy model and $549.99 for the Nanomatte screen variant, this device aims to attract users seeking enhanced build quality and features beyond Amazon’s typical entry-level tablets.
Distinguishing itself from the Fire line, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro runs an unmodified Android OS with full access to the Google Play Store, avoiding locked ecosystems or Amazon-exclusive app stores. The tablet is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 octa-core processor supported by either 8GB or 12GB of RAM, suitable for moderate gaming, Alexa functionalities, and everyday apps. The aluminum unibody design weighs 550 grams, positioning it slightly lighter than the 13-inch iPad Air but heavier than the 11-inch model.
The device’s standout feature is its 12.3-inch 3:2 display available with Corning’s Nanomatte technology. This specialized matte coating dramatically reduces glare and reflections, creating a paper-like viewing experience. During demonstrations in bright, sunlit environments, the Nanomatte screen maintained clarity and readability from multiple angles, outperforming the standard glossy display which became reflective and washed out under the same conditions. Although a direct comparison to Apple’s nano-texture iPad displays has not been side-by-side tested, anecdotal impressions suggest the Alexa Tablet’s screen retains higher contrast and offers a similarly comfortable stylus experience.
Complementing the display is an immersive Kindle mode that restricts background activities, silences notifications, and lowers blue light emissions to mitigate eye strain. This mode can extend battery life from 16 to 20 hours and offers three display settings: Standard (full color vibrancy), Color (muted tones), and Ink (grayscale).
Amazon integrates Alexa deeply within the tablet experience. Prominent features include an “Ask Alexa” bar for instant voice interactions and a Dynamic Tab that proactively suggests content like book or media resumptions or travel itineraries based on personalized data from Amazon services. While features such as “On-Screen Intelligence,” which responds contextually to on-screen content, are opt-in with user privacy controls, Alexa can also assist with shopping by identifying items in photos and facilitating purchases through Amazon’s ecosystem.
Accessories like the Alexa Tablet Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard attach magnetically. The keyboard is functional but noted as somewhat bulky and equipped with shallow keys, suitable primarily for short typing sessions rather than prolonged use.
Alongside the 12 Pro, Amazon also announced two smaller models without the Nanomatte screen option: the Alexa Tablet 11 starting at $329.99 and the Alexa Tablet 8 at $229.99, available in various vibrant colors. The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, with its combination of premium hardware, innovative matte display technology, and integrated Alexa features, marks Amazon’s push into a more sophisticated tablet market segment.
