Richualist introduces Mint, a hair tool easing curly hair styling by detangling, conditioning, and styling with warming technology, reducing styling time and hair damage.
Richualist, founded by Dawn Myers, has developed Mint, a novel hair tool designed specifically for the care and styling of textured and curly hair. Recognizing a longstanding gap in beauty hardware, Myers sought to create a device that simplifies the traditionally time-consuming and tedious "wash day" routine experienced by many with natural curls and afros.
Myers reflects on the historical neglect of textured hair needs, noting the social pressures and lack of suitable styling tools prior to recent cultural shifts embracing natural curls. Early attempts to find appropriate technology were unsuccessful, leading her to devise Mint, which combines detangling, conditioning, gelling, and styling into a single stroke via refillable product pods. A distinctive feature is its warming mechanism that gently heats the product for improved application.
This innovation drastically cuts styling time from over an hour to approximately 7 to 10 minutes per session, while also mitigating hair breakage and shedding by up to 70% by minimizing physical strain on hair strands. The product's development involved collaboration with Dow, a materials science company, which provided engineering and manufacturing expertise after identifying the textured hair care market opportunity.
Despite challenges in securing venture capital—compounded by the niche focus on textured hair—Myers leveraged personal resources to fund product development. Her perseverance was rewarded with over $1 million in funding and eventual commercial launch. Her journey included overcoming health adversities, notably a stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis, while securing investment deals, including a pivotal agreement with Mark Cuban and Emma Grede on "Shark Tank."
Mint's successful entry into retail, including Ulta's online store, along with recognition as one of TechCrunch's Startup Battlefield 200 companies, positions Richualist at the forefront of technological innovation in hair care. Myers emphasizes the importance of bringing textured hair care technology into the spotlight alongside cutting-edge tech advancements, marking a significant stride in addressing an underserved market segment.
