AI cloud provider Lambda is preparing a substantial funding round led by Coatue and Blackstone, valuing the company at $14.5 billion before a planned 2027 IPO, supported by a major contract with Anthropic.

Lambda, an AI-focused cloud computing provider backed by Nvidia, is set to raise up to $4 billion in what may be its final private funding round ahead of an initial public offering in 2027, according to a report by TechCrunch citing The Wall Street Journal. This funding round is led by investment firms Coatue Management and Blackstone and values Lambda at a pre-money valuation of $14.5 billion.

A letter to investors revealed that Lambda's backlog—the value of contracted future work—has surged from $15 billion in June to $50 billion by September. However, the significant increase in backlog is largely attributable to a single contract: Anthropic, a leading AI research lab, signed a $35 billion deal with Lambda in late August. This agreement is a central factor in the company's valuation, indicating that Lambda's future revenue projections depend in large part on Anthropic's continued payments.

Demand for reliable GPU capacity remains extremely high within the AI development sector, a factor that continues to attract investor confidence in companies like Lambda that provide cloud-based AI computing power. Nonetheless, the primary challenge for such "neoclouds" is the capital-intensive nature of expanding data center infrastructure. Lambda recently secured an additional $1 billion in debt financing to fund these buildouts, though lending conditions have become more restrictive, with lenders scrutinizing potential borrowers more closely.

By raising this extensive new equity round now, Lambda aims to bolster its financial position prior to entering the public markets, setting a benchmark for its IPO valuation and providing increased capital flexibility. While Lambda had initially targeted a public offering in 2026, it has postponed the IPO amid market uncertainties and is now aiming for a 2027 debut.

Should Lambda proceed with its IPO as planned, it would join a cohort of Nvidia-backed neocloud providers—such as CoreWeave and Nebius—that rely significantly on public market funding to underwrite their ongoing data center expansions. Additionally, British neocloud company Nscale recently filed for its IPO and is expected to begin trading soon.

Neither Lambda nor the lead investors Coatue and Blackstone have provided immediate public comments regarding the new funding round or IPO plans.
