Amazon introduces a fresh lineup of Alexa Tablets running full Google Play-supported Android aiming to rival the iPad with premium hardware and a standout display, including a unique nanomatte screen on the top model, releasing October 14, 2026.

Amazon has unveiled a brand-new family of tablets branded as Alexa Tablets, marking a significant departure from its long-standing Fire tablet lineup. Unlike previous Amazon slates, these devices run full Android with Google Play support, enabling users to access a complete Android app ecosystem. This move is intended to provide a more versatile tablet experience, departing from the Fire OS model that lacked Google services.

The Alexa Tablets aim to blend the voice assistant Alexa deeply into everyday computing while delivering premium hardware. Amazon’s Senior Vice President Panos Panay revealed that the project began from scratch over two and a half years ago with a fresh design philosophy emphasizing quality components and user experience rather than reusing Fire tablet parts.

The lineup comprises three models launching on October 14, 2026. The Alexa Tablet 8 features an 8.7-inch display starting at $229.99, primarily targeting reading and portable use. The midrange Alexa Tablet 11 offers an 11-inch screen starting at $329.99, optimized for video consumption. Both target competition with Apple's iPad Mini and base iPad models.

The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the centerpiece, a 12.5-inch device priced from $499, notable for its 2800 x 1840 resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, and 500 nits brightness. Amazon collaborated with Corning to engineer a novel nanomatte display on the highest-end $549 model, which features an etched glass texture designed to reduce glare and enhance contrast without compromising sharpness—an approach reminiscent of Apple’s nano-texture technology but claimed to provide superior visual quality.

Powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 processor with configurations up to 16GB RAM and 256GB storage, the 12 Pro balances solid performance with ambitious screen innovations. Panay emphasized the display as the "one thing" in the device’s design that could not be compromised.

Software enhancements personalize the visuals for content type, such as warmer tones for reading Kindle books or glossy effects for comics, showcasing Amazon’s intent to optimize for media consumption and integration with Prime Video.

In addition to media and reading, Amazon supports productivity accessories like a keyboard case and stylus, positioning these tablets as potential primary or secondary computers. Alexa Plus, Amazon’s advanced conversational assistant featuring large language model capabilities, is deeply embedded, allowing users to query content on the screen and receive recommendations or shopping links, positioning Alexa as a central, proactive presence beyond smart home control.

This new initiative signals Amazon’s serious commitment to making high-end tablets that challenge Apple’s iPad dominance, combining rich hardware, a full Android environment, and pervasive AI assistance. If Amazon’s innovations, particularly the display technology, meet expectations, these Alexa Tablets could represent a major shift in the tablet market.
