Bose has launched Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds connecting via USB-C, offering active noise cancellation without a battery pack, high-res audio, and simplicity without charging or pairing hassles.
In a time when wireless earbuds dominate the market, Bose has made a noteworthy return to wired audio solutions by introducing the Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds that connect over USB-C. Traditionally, wired earbuds have relied on passive noise isolation due to power constraints of analog connectors. Bose's new model, however, leverages the power available through the USB-C interface to enable active noise cancellation (ANC) without the need for an additional battery pack.
Priced at $99, these earbuds offer features uncommon in wired options today: ANC, high-resolution audio support at 24-bit/48kHz, and low latency audio suitable for syncing with video content. Contrasting with Bose's wireless models, the wired earbuds have two microphones per side for noise cancellation, providing effective suppression of low-frequency ambient sounds like air conditioners and traffic rumble. Mid and high-frequency noises, such as conversations, are less effectively canceled, and a mild high-end hiss emerges when ANC is active without playback.
Users benefit from straightforward operation—no charging or pairing is required, simply plug into a USB-C port on compatible phones or computers, and the earbuds function immediately. The in-line remote includes three buttons controlling volume, playback, and noise cancellation modes, designed with a tactile rubber texture for responsive interaction.
The earbuds come with multiple ear tip sizes and wing options to ensure secure, comfortable fit and feature an IPX4 rating suitable for light rain or exercise. Sound quality is characterized by clear, bright vocals and punchy bass, with the wired connection enabling lossless audio transport. Testing showed a subtle but perceptible improvement when listening to high-resolution audio streams over standard CD-quality offerings.
However, wired earbuds naturally bear some downsides; the cable can snag on objects, and cable noise from friction is present, though less noticeable due to effective insulation. Wind noise can interfere with the microphones during outdoor use, affecting ANC and transparency features. Call quality is average, with the microphone susceptible to picking up ambient sounds in busy environments.
While wireless earbuds remain the prevalent choice for many, Bose’s Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds stand out as the best affordable wired ANC option, combining the simplicity and reliability of wired connections with modern features like active noise cancellation and high-res audio support.
