Epic Games debuts a new AI-assisted Epic Games Launcher Preview, claiming improved speed over Steam. The launcher, built from scratch with AI support, aims for better performance and cross-platform support but is currently feature-light and carries some bugs.

Epic Games has introduced a "Preview" version of its newly developed Epic Games Launcher, incorporating a development approach it calls "vibe coding." This new launcher is designed to be faster and more responsive than the previous iteration as well as competitive platforms such as Valve's Steam. Epic publicly launched this preview build on October 14, 2026, highlighting the use of artificial intelligence to assist in coding and reviewing new features from the ground up.

Martin Keely, Epic Games Store General Manager and VP, told PC Gamer that the team started the project entirely anew, employing AI tools to create a new technology stack rather than directly porting legacy code. This strategy aimed to replicate existing functionality while enabling a leaner development team to build faster and improve cross-platform compatibility, including Windows, Mac, and plans for Linux support.

Epic’s social media emphasizes speed gains, claiming their new launcher launches from a cold start notably faster than Steam. Independent testing by Ars Technica corroborated these speed improvements, measuring a faster startup to the store page and slightly quicker restoration from the system tray, though the difference in restore speed is minimal and potentially unnoticeable.

This effort follows Epic’s earlier announcement in June 2026 of a "storefront rearchitecture" with a private beta version of Launcher V2 promising up to five times faster cold start times, addressing longstanding performance challenges faced by users.

However, the company cautions that the "vibe coded" Preview may contain bugs and currently lacks some features from the legacy launcher, including certain social and account management options. A new Recent Games list and centralized downloads hub are among the additions. Epic aims to achieve feature parity with the former launcher through ongoing updates driven by user feedback from the early testing phase.

The Preview release coincides with a broader company shift toward integrating AI deeply into game development, recently publicized by CEO Tim Sweeney, indicating Epic’s commitment to maximizing AI to enhance productivity and quality in future projects. This includes developments on upcoming games with high-profile licenses such as Star Wars and Marvel.

The new Epic Games Launcher Preview is now publicly available for users to test and provide feedback, representing a notable step in Epic's evolution of its digital game storefront and launcher technology.
