Bluesky plans to launch payment features that support buying, selling, and fundraising directly on its decentralized social network, aiming to monetize without relying on advertising and to empower users with control over their digital identities and revenue.
Bluesky, the decentralized social networking platform, is preparing to roll out payment capabilities in the coming months as part of a broader strategy to enable monetization without depending on advertising. The company's CEO Toni Schneider and COO Rose Wang detailed these plans during a TechCrunch Disrupt event, emphasizing the goal of facilitating commerce and fundraising activities that are already taking place organically across the network.
Toni Schneider, who assumed leadership in March, explained that users currently engage in buying, selling, and supporting one another financially on the platform, and Bluesky aims to simplify this by allowing direct monetary support for content or causes across all apps in its ecosystem. He acknowledged the user concerns about leadership changes but noted that the ability of users to switch platforms enforces accountability, especially as monetization features are introduced.
Rose Wang highlighted the company's commitment to alternative business models beyond advertising, pointing to Schneider's successful experience growing WordPress Automatic into a large business that benefits both the parent company and its ecosystem. She also emphasized Bluesky's status as a Public Benefit Corporation, which prioritizes its mission over purely profit-driven goals.
Wang criticized traditional social networks where users generate value but receive little in return, likening it to a feudal system where a few landlords control everything and users pay dues. In contrast, Bluesky seeks to empower its users by giving them ownership of their digital identities and ensuring that revenue flows directly to the creators and contributors.
The initial launch will focus on payment functionality, but the leadership team envisions disrupting the underlying infrastructure of social networks to create a more open internet. This approach aims to enable new pathways for value and revenue distribution that support the network’s mission and user base, rather than following the conventional advertising-dependent models.
Overall, Bluesky is positioning itself as a pioneer in reshaping social network monetization by integrating payment systems that respect user autonomy and promote a fair economic ecosystem within a decentralized social media environment.
