YouTube Music is rolling out labels that identify songs created or significantly altered with generative AI, helping listeners distinguish between human and AI-made music.
Google has started implementing new labels on songs in YouTube Music that indicate whether the music was created entirely or significantly modified using generative AI tools. This initiative aims to increase transparency for listeners who want to know if the music they are enjoying involves AI technologies. The feature, currently rolling out on the YouTube Music app and website, will soon extend to AI-generated music videos on YouTube itself.
According to a Google blog post covered by Ars Technica, the company acknowledges that generative AI offers artists novel opportunities for creation and experimentation, and it does not intend to ban AI music. Instead, the labeling helps users identify AI involvement in tracks.
The AI label appears on the playback screen, and tapping it reveals more information about the usage of AI in that track. Google uses a combination of partner disclosures and its own detection technologies to categorize content as fully AI-generated, partially AI-generated, or not AI-generated. While uploaders can voluntarily disclose the extent of AI use, this is optional.
To improve accuracy, Google leverages techniques like SynthID watermarking—employed for content generated with Google AI tools—as well as Collaborative Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) metadata used by other AI music creators. However, Google cautions that the absence of an AI label does not guarantee purely human-crafted music, as detecting AI involvement can be complex given the many AI tools that leave no identifiable traces.
While labeling AI-generated videos has proven useful on YouTube due to visible on-screen tags, the impact may be less direct in music listening scenarios where users may need to actively check the label, often in background modes or on mobile devices. Currently, YouTube Music does not provide options to filter out AI-labeled tracks from playlists.
Overall, Google’s rollout of AI music labeling represents an important step toward transparency in the evolving music streaming landscape, keeping listeners informed about the creative origins of their songs. The feature is now available on YouTube Music, with the main YouTube platform expected to adopt similar labels shortly.
