Cal AI, an AI-driven calorie tracking app founded by 19-year-old Zach Yadegari in 2024, grew rapidly through targeted influencer marketing, generating $30 million in two years before MyFitnessPal acquired it in 2026.
Cal AI, an AI-powered calorie tracking application established in 2024 by Zach Yadegari, who was then a recent high school graduate, achieved rapid viral success largely due to a deliberate influencer marketing strategy. Over a period of two years, the app amassed over $30 million in revenue and was acquired by MyFitnessPal for a sum that was not publicly disclosed in March 2026.
Yadegari, speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt in October 2026, detailed the growth tactics behind Cal AI’s rapid rise. According to him, the company initially found a breakthrough when a single social media post by an influencer brought around a thousand users within two days. This early sign confirmed the potential of leveraging influencers to gain traction.
Capitalizing on this discovery, the company quickly expanded its outreach by enlisting numerous influencers, primarily young individuals seeking cash rewards. Yadegari explained that Cal AI negotiated compensation based on performance, setting specific payout levels tied to user acquisition targets. This method ensured sustained promotion until the desired reach was achieved.
An essential factor in their approach was identifying influencers with tightly-knit communities to maximize engagement and conversion rates. Yadegari described the effect as “linear but extremely fast,” where each influencer’s post reliably attracted a predictable number of new users.
Yadegari, who attributes part of his freedom to pursue these ventures to his family support, expressed skepticism about traditional higher education’s role in entrepreneurial success, suggesting college is more about social experiences than professional preparation.
Following Cal AI’s acquisition, Yadegari launched another venture named Persona, an AI personal assistant designed to integrate seamlessly across devices and communication platforms. The startup secured $10 million in initial funding, with ambitions to develop supporting hardware to complement the software ecosystem.
Cal AI’s story underscores the potency of targeted influencer marketing in propelling AI-driven apps to rapid profitability and acquisition, illustrating how young entrepreneurs can leverage social media dynamics effectively in today’s technology landscape.
