Mechanism unveiled its first Switch 2 case, the $49 Basecase, a modular snap-on shell designed for protection, improved comfort, and compatibility with its existing mount system.

Mechanism, a well-regarded accessory maker, has released its first protective case for the Nintendo Switch 2, called the Basecase. Priced at $49, this snap-on shell brings both protection and modular versatility to the console, complementing Mechanism’s established lineup of mounts. Unlike most competitors who have slowed new Switch 2 accessory releases, Mechanism’s Basecase stands out by combining secure fitting, ergonomic improvements, and customizability.

The design of the Basecase accommodates the full range of the Switch 2’s built-in kickstand and maintains full access to all ports, buttons, and cooling vents. A notable feature is its tighter fit around the console’s bottom USB-C port, offering enhanced stability. The rear plate of the case can be removed and swapped with custom 3D-printed versions, allowing personalization and additional utility. Mechanism showcased examples including a plate with Lego pegs for attaching minifigures and another with compartments for game cartridges.

Joy-Con grips included with the Basecase are modular and available in two sizes, enhancing comfort and adding bulk as needed. These grips also feature storage for game cartridges when detached. Mechanism demonstrated prototype grips created via 3D printing, such as designs with small finger rests, hinting at the possibilities for users who want to customize their experience.

The Basecase is not compatible with the official Switch 2 dock. To address this, Mechanism includes a dock adapter cable that connects to the dock’s video-out USB-C port. Though its installation requires some effort, this approach differs from competitors’ dock designs. Users employing third-party USB-C docks from manufacturers like Jsaux or Genki will not require this adapter.

Mechanism’s Basecase addresses several shortcomings seen in earlier Switch 2 cases from brands like Dbrand and Genki, including quality control and stability concerns. For example, the Basecase’s Joy-Con grips incorporate rubber lips that secure the controller’s colored section, preventing the console from slipping when lifted by the controllers. These grips also snap on effortlessly, avoiding the alignment difficulties reported with previous accessories.

Overall, for users invested in Mechanism’s ecosystem of mounts, the Basecase is a timely and valuable addition. Newcomers to the brand’s system may also find it an excellent entry point, supported by freely available 3D printer files for further customization. The Basecase enhances Switch 2 protection, ergonomics, and modularity, marking a notable advancement in Switch accessories.
