The upgraded ChatGPT Chrome extension can access and utilize open browser tabs to assist with tasks like comparing products, filling forms, and managing schedules, expanding its interactive capabilities beyond the standalone ChatGPT Atlas browser.

OpenAI has enhanced its ChatGPT Google Chrome extension with new features that allow it to interact directly with the user's open browser tabs. This update comes after the discontinuation of OpenAI's dedicated ChatGPT Atlas browser, effectively integrating some similar tab-access capabilities into the more widely used Chrome extension.

With the updated extension installed, users can tag Chrome within the ChatGPT web or desktop app, enabling the AI to view and utilize information from their currently open tabs. OpenAI demonstrated this functionality by showing how ChatGPT could compare multiple tabs featuring sofas a user was considering for purchase.

Practical example queries provided by OpenAI illustrate the extension’s expanded potential. Users can ask ChatGPT to extract details from event briefs to fill out registration forms without submitting, organize vendor information from several tabs into comparison sheets with pricing and feature summaries, compare contractor services for home renovation, and draft emails accordingly. Moreover, ChatGPT can assist with filling out forms related to appointments and automatically add those appointments to personal and work calendars.

The extension also upgrades ChatGPT's sidebar interface, offering “the full power of ChatGPT” along with access to entire conversation histories in Work or Chat modes without navigating away from the current page. Notably, ChatGPT Work can control Chrome tabs for actions like sending messages, completing forms, or downloading files. This capability is reminiscent of Google's Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature and includes options to organize or group tabs, enhancing overall productivity.

This advancement significantly broadens ChatGPT's usability within the browsing context. By leveraging real-time tab data, the AI moves closer to functioning as a proactive assistant capable of managing complex workflows and cross-tab interactions in a seamless browser environment. OpenAI’s approach effectively merges conversational AI with browser automation, aiming to streamline users' multitasking and information management directly through Chrome.
