Nvidia has refined its DLSS 5 technology ahead of its debut in Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, toning down earlier drastic visual changes and improving performance with an October update.
Nvidia's DLSS 5, a neural rendering upscaling technology initially unveiled earlier this year, faced criticism from gamers for its extreme alterations to character faces. Early demonstrations showed visual distortions such as a teenage character in Hogwarts Legacy appearing significantly older and other faces looking unnaturally altered. These reactions highlighted concerns that the feature compromised artistic intent.
Ahead of DLSS 5's official integration in Hogwarts Legacy, set for release on November 5, Nvidia has substantially moderated the technology’s impact on visuals. The company published new comparison images revealing much subtler changes; teenagers no longer exhibit the unintended age shifts, and environmental alterations are less pronounced. This adjustment reflects Nvidia’s emphasis that developers maintain detailed artistic control over how DLSS 5 is implemented in their games.
In parallel with aesthetic refinements, Nvidia announced an upcoming October update to DLSS 5's neural rendering system. This update is designed to enhance performance, particularly on new RTX 50-series GPUs and future RTX Spark laptops, by reducing the model size by 24% to about 118 million parameters and cutting 4K VRAM usage by 20%. Nvidia’s Andrew Burnes noted that this streamlined model, set to launch first with NBA 2K27 on October 16, will become the default in subsequent DLSS 5-supported games.
Additionally, Nvidia has released a beta update to its Nvidia app expanding on frame generation capabilities for RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs. This update introduces a "performance mode" that utilizes a lighter AI algorithm to boost frame rates by up to 35%, with minor quality trade-offs. The feature supports Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation, and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, aiming to enhance gaming smoothness on compatible hardware.
Overall, Nvidia’s refinements to DLSS 5 reflect a response to early feedback, balancing advanced upscaling technology with the preservation of intended visual design. With Hogwarts Legacy and other games adopting the updated technology, players can anticipate improved image fidelity and performance.
