Actor Ben Affleck is gaining attention for his extensive knowledge of AI, including machine learning and neural networks, and his work developing AI tools for filmmaking, highlighted by his startup's sale to Netflix.

Ben Affleck, widely known as a Hollywood actor, is earning new recognition for his deep engagement with artificial intelligence technologies, especially as they intersect with filmmaking. Earlier this year, Affleck sold his AI-driven filmmaking startup, InterPositive, to Netflix, a deal reported at $587 million—though Affleck clarified he did not own the entire company.

His technical interest dates back to when film transitioned from analog to digital formats, which spurred his fascination with video processing workflows that incorporate machine learning. Affleck shared in a recent GQ interview that he can write basic Python scripts and explained AI concepts such as convolutional neural networks, transformers, tensors, and GPU-based inference, carefully defining these terms for the interviewer.

He discussed how neural networks assist in tasks like pattern recognition and edge detection, crucial for effects such as green screen compositing. These capabilities enable more efficient visual effects by identifying scene elements like window ledges to isolate and replace backgrounds.

Affleck also revealed that his celebrity status allowed him unique access to AI innovators, including OpenAI, helping him to grasp how AI could enhance the artistic process without replacing human creativity. This insight led him to build a proprietary dataset over eight months, capturing extensive footage to train AI models tailored for cinematic tasks.

At the Screentime 2026 conference, Affleck described fine-tuning open-source AI video models by unfreezing their weights and training them on specific cinematic standards, thus creating custom models for particular films while retaining proprietary elements. He applied this approach in post-production on his movie "Animals."

Regarding AI's societal impact, Affleck expressed concern about responsible usage, particularly the effect on education and potential over-reliance, but dismissed fears of dystopian AI takeovers, anticipating AI to be an additive tool rather than a replacement in filmmaking.

Affleck's involvement highlights a unique crossover between entertainment and advanced AI technology, demonstrating practical applications of neural networks and machine learning to innovate filmmaking processes and underscoring the collaborative potential of AI and artists in the creative industries.
