Germany aims to lead global industrial AI adoption by partnering with NVIDIA, focusing on its manufacturing expertise and Mittelstand SMEs. New investments and collaborations are set to advance AI-driven manufacturing and digital innovation.
At Berlin's historic Kraftwerk venue, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz engaged in discussions with NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang regarding Germany's ambitions to become a world leader in industrial artificial intelligence (AI). This meeting highlighted Germany’s strategic plan to integrate AI extensively within its traditional engineering and manufacturing sectors.
NVIDIA's longstanding ties with German industry date back to the early 2000s, supporting gaming systems, automotive design, and digital twin technologies. Currently, the focus shifts towards empowering Germany’s industrial base, particularly its small and medium-sized enterprises known as the Mittelstand, to embrace AI-driven transformation.
A Joint Declaration of Intent was signed involving Chancellor Merz and NVIDIA as part of the Invest in Germany Summit, formalizing a collaborative initiative to advance physical AI models. This effort aligns with Germany’s Industry 4.0 Platform, an initiative encompassing political, industrial, and academic stakeholders aimed at creating a leading European ecosystem for industrial AI.
Chancellor Merz emphasized the potential for Germany to be among the world’s most advanced nations in AI integration, particularly leveraging the extensive data and expertise within the Mittelstand. Jensen Huang affirmed that AI would augment rather than replace German industrial know-how, enhancing capabilities across manufacturing and automotive sectors.
Recognizing this as a new industrial revolution, both leaders expressed optimism that combining AI with Germany’s physical technology expertise will significantly accelerate economic success. To support this vision, NVIDIA committed nearly $10 billion to invest in European companies, with new funding announced for German startups Agile Robots, Avelios Medical, Mirelo, and Reflex Aerospace, focused on AI-driven robotics, healthcare systems, audio production, and satellite technology respectively.
Further advancing industrial AI, Siemens announced collaboration with NVIDIA to pioneer autonomous factory solutions that reduce engineering efforts and enable adaptive production planning, demonstrated at Siemens’ Erlangen facility.
In addition to industrial applications, NVIDIA researchers achieved a record simulation of a 104-qubit fault-tolerant quantum computer using Europe’s largest supercomputer, JUPITER at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, showcasing cutting-edge computational capabilities relevant to future AI advancements.
This partnership signals a robust commitment to making Germany a global hub for AI-enhanced industry through concerted government, corporate, and research collaborations.
