Google introduces an advanced AI agent within Gemini, enabling task planning and execution across business systems with multi-model support and a unique workplace identity.

At a recent Google Cloud event, Google announced a significant enhancement to its Gemini AI platform, transforming it into an agentic AI capable of autonomously planning and executing tasks across various business applications and systems. This new unified agent interface goes beyond answering queries to actively managing workflows, including scheduling, coding, and resource coordination.

This move builds on trends seen in AI where tools evolve from conversational interfaces to agents that assume operational responsibilities on behalf of users. Google references the rise of similar consumer and messaging-based AI agents, such as Meta’s Muse and ChatGPT’s Dots, situating Gemini’s latest capabilities within this competitive landscape.

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Gemini already serves over 1 billion monthly active users globally and is used by nearly 90% of Fortune 100 companies, providing a robust user base for this agentic expansion. Initially, Google will focus on deploying these capabilities within enterprise environments to address complex challenges related to security, scaling, and performance before considering consumer rollout.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian emphasized that the agent operates on "objectives, not just instructions," allowing it to autonomously plan actions, leverage custom skills, and integrate with corporate systems. The agent automatically selects the most effective AI model for each task but also offers users the option to manually choose models, including third-party options such as Anthropic’s Claude, with plans to expand support for open-source and private models.

The architecture supports attachments and workstream-specific projects, connecting securely to a wide range of business tools like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, and more. It also interoperates with any Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, whether inside or outside company networks.

A distinctive feature is the AI agent having its own Google Workspace identity, complete with an email address and contextual awareness of organizational structures, team membership, calendars, and approval chains. Interaction with the agent occurs through tagging, email, sharing, or group chats, and its actions generate an audit trail linked to the agent rather than individual employees.

The agent is accessible across mobile devices (iOS and Android), desktop platforms (Windows and Mac), command line interfaces, and productivity suites including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow, and Slack.

Early testers such as On, Shopify, and PayPal have integrated the agent, and notable Gemini Enterprise clients include global companies like BNP Paribas, Bradesco, Merck, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper, SOMPO, Ulta Beauty, and Wesfarmers. To facilitate enterprise adoption, Google introduced flexible spending options, featuring multi-model orchestration, intelligent routing, and real-time cost caps to help businesses manage AI expenditures effectively.

This advancement marks a significant shift in Google's AI strategy, positioning Gemini as a capable autonomous assistant within business ecosystems with strong integration and operational capabilities.
